Doorfarer vs the tools you use now.
We took five real trips from small and mid-size US towns and ran each one, on the same day, through Google Flights, Skyscanner, Kiwi.com, Rome2rio, a plain chatbot and Doorfarer. Here is what each one does, and where it stops. Tested 30 October 2026.
The short version
Google Flights, Skyscanner and Kiwi.com search flights from the airport you type. Rome2rio shows the way to the airport, but with wide, undated price ranges. A chatbot without tools guesses. Doorfarer starts at your front door, looks at every airport in reach, adds the real train, bus or drive to each flight, and ranks whole trips on your dates.
| Google Flights | Skyscanner | Kiwi.com | Rome2rio | Chatbot, no tools | Doorfarer | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starts from | The airport you type | The airport you type | The airport you type | Your town | Whatever it guesses | Your town |
| Airports looked at | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 to 5 in our tests | 1 or 2, from memory | 8 in every test |
| Getting to the airport priced and timed | No | No | No | Timed; priced as a range | Estimated | Yes, on your dates |
| One door-to-door price and time | No | No | No | A range, no dates | A guess | Yes |
| Live fares | Yes | Yes | Yes | Ranges | No | Recent searches |
| Books the flight | Sends you to the seller | Sends you to the seller | Can book it for you | Sends you to the seller | No | Sends you to the seller |
Skyscanner showed a bot check to our automated browser on four of five trips, and Kiwi.com did not finish on two. We did not get around either; those gaps are marked in the raw data.
Five trips, same dates for everyone
For each trip we asked Doorfarer one question, then checked its dates and airports on Google Flights, the way a careful person would. "Nearest" is the airport closest to home. Prices are per person, round trip, in dollars.
| Trip | Google Flights, nearest airport | Google Flights, Doorfarer's airport | Doorfarer, door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ithaca, NY to Lisbon May 4 to 11 | Elmira (ELM) $1,178 | New York (JFK) $709 | $524 JFK, incl. $93 ground |
| Madison, WI to Tokyo May 21 to Jun 4 | Madison (MSN) $1,549 | Chicago (ORD) $976 | $1,067 ORD, incl. $56 ground |
| Hartford, CT to Madrid Mar 23 to 30 | Bradley (BDL) $666 | New York (JFK) $624 | $396 JFK, incl. $51 ground |
| Santa Cruz, CA to Tokyo Apr 18 to 29 | San Jose (SJC) $1,073 | San Francisco (SFO) $1,003 | $994 SFO, incl. $36 ground |
| Asheville, NC to Barcelona Apr 17 to 26 | Asheville (AVL) $820 | Charlotte (CLT) $846 | $812 CLT, incl. $51 ground |
Doorfarer's total adds the ground leg and the airport-to-city train at the destination. Its flight prices come from a cache of recent searches and can differ from the live fare: see "Where the others win" below. The Google columns are flight only, and do not include getting to the airport.
What the five trips show
- The nearest airport is often not the best one. On Google's live fares, flying from Chicago instead of Madison was $573 cheaper, and from New York instead of Elmira (the airport nearest Ithaca) $469 cheaper, before the ride there: about $480 and $370 ahead once the ground leg is paid. In the other three trips the airports were within about $70 of each other, and the nearest was as good or better. You only know which kind of trip yours is by looking.
- Nobody else priced the way to the airport. Google Flights, Skyscanner and Kiwi.com showed neither the cost nor the hours of getting to the airport in any of the five trips. Rome2rio showed times and a range, for example €222 to €784 from Santa Cruz, with no dates. Doorfarer gave a dated price and time for every ground leg, and says when one is an estimate.
- Doorfarer looked at eight airports every time. Google Flights, Skyscanner and Kiwi.com searched the one we typed. Rome2rio listed two to five. From Asheville it listed Asheville, Greenville-Spartanburg and Knoxville, and not Charlotte, where Doorfarer's cheapest trip started.
- One question, not dozens of searches. A careful person needs one flight search per airport per month they could travel, plus a ground lookup per airport: about 40 searches for the Ithaca and Madison trips and 16 to 32 for the others, before comparing a thing. Doorfarer took one question per trip, or two when we had to widen the dates.
Where the others win
- Fresh fares. Google Flights, Skyscanner and Kiwi.com show live prices. Doorfarer's come from recent searches by other travelers, and the booking link opens a live search where the real price shows. For the same airport and dates, Doorfarer's fare was lower than Google's live fare in four of five trips, by $315 for Hartford to Madrid and $285 for Ithaca to Lisbon, and $10 higher in the fifth. So its door-to-door totals can be optimistic: trust the live price when it differs.
- Booking. Kiwi.com can book the trip for you. Google Flights and Skyscanner have polished booking flows and price tracking. Doorfarer hands you to a seller and doesn't book.
- Coverage. Doorfarer's cache had no fare at all from the nearest airport in any of the five trips, and three of five questions needed wider dates before they answered. Google Flights answered every search. Rome2rio also lists small airports we skip, like Ithaca's own.
- Speed per search. One Google Flights search takes a few seconds. Doorfarer's value is that you don't run forty of them.
- Not what we do. Multi-city trips, hotels and cars: use Google Flights, Kiwi.com or Rome2rio.
What a chatbot with no tools does
We asked the same five questions of Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol with no search or tools, each for about a cent. Both answered, both said they can't see live fares, and both gave a sensible-sounding plan: a bus to a big airport, a named airline, a price range.
- They pick a plan, not a comparison. Each named one airport and sometimes one alternative. Neither compared eight or priced them against each other.
- Prices are remembered ranges. For Ithaca to Lisbon they named Newark with a TAP nonstop at about $450 to $650 for the flight; Google Flights showed $709 from New York for those dates, and Elmira $1,178. For Hartford, one named a nonstop to Dublin "if operating".
- The way to the airport is a guess from memory: bus fares and drive times, with no timetable behind them.
Connected to Doorfarer, the same chatbot stops guessing: it asks the tool and shows the table. Connect Doorfarer to Claude or ChatGPT in two minutes.
How we tested
Doorfarer was asked one natural question per trip, through its public connector. The competitor pages were read
in a normal browser on 30 October 2026; where a page showed euros or a bot check, we say so in the raw data. Google
Flights was searched twice per trip: from the nearest airport and from the airport Doorfarer chose, on Doorfarer's
exact dates. The data, with screenshots, dates and the chatbots' answers, is in the project's
docs/launch/comparison/ folder. Fares move daily; run your own trip to see today's numbers.

Questions
Is Doorfarer better than Google Flights?
For a trip from a town with several airports in reach, Doorfarer compares all of them with the way there included, which Google Flights doesn't do. For one airport you've already chosen, Google Flights has live prices and is quicker. In our five tests a farther airport won clearly in two, by about $480 and $370 door to door.
Is Doorfarer better than Skyscanner or Kiwi.com?
Skyscanner and Kiwi.com search flights from the airport you pick, and neither prices the ride to it. Kiwi.com can book the trip for you. Doorfarer adds the train, bus or drive to each airport and ranks whole trips by price and hours.
How is Doorfarer different from Rome2rio?
Rome2rio shows how to get from your town to a place, including the way to the airport, but with undated price ranges and a short list of airports (two to five in our tests). Doorfarer searches eight airports on your dates and gives one door-to-door price and time for each trip.
Why not just ask ChatGPT or Claude for the cheapest flight?
Without a tool, a chatbot can't see live fares or timetables, so it names one plan from memory with estimated prices. In our tests both said so themselves. Connected to Doorfarer, the assistant looks up every airport in reach and shows real options instead.
Where is Doorfarer weaker than other tools?
Its fares come from recent searches, not live inventory, so they can differ from the live price, and some routes have no cached fare for a window. It doesn't book flights, hotels or multi-city trips. Google Flights, Skyscanner and Kiwi.com are better for live prices and booking.
How many searches does it take to find the cheapest airport by hand?
At least one flight search per airport per month you could travel, plus a ground lookup for each airport. For eight airports and a two-month window that is about 16 flight searches and 8 ground lookups before you compare anything. Doorfarer does the same from one question.
